For any kind of drilling, the drilling shale shakers are absolutely necessary for a complete solids control system. The shale shakers can remove all particles larger than 100 microns.

Some solids control system involves all 4 stages for separation, including shale shaker, desander cones, desilter cones and decanter centrifuge. Among those stages, as mentioned, shale shaker removes most particles, while desander and desilter cones are responsible for particles respectively 40 microns and 20 microns. Decanter centrifuges are invited to high standard drilling mud, for example, for oil and gas drilling projects. They are used for separate the fine solids from 2 to 5 microns.

In some projects when the space is limited, clients prefer to use fewer equipment. Even though, they remove the desander cones and desilter cones from their solids control list, leaving only shale shaker and decanter centrifuge. And for some work-over rigs, only shale shaker is used for the system. It is clear that shale shaker is a must in all such solutions.
