Drilling mud solids control system is also called drilling mud recycling system. When doing a drilling work, there must be a solids control system alongside the rig, in order to remove the drilling cuttings in time and allow the clean drilling mud to be back to the drilling rig. An efficient drilling solids control system helps to protect the mud pump, saves mud by recovering as much as expensive drilling mud and leaves less pollution to the environment.

Normally, a traditional complete drilling solids control system contains 4 steps of solids control equipment, based on various particle sizes:

1. Shale shaker is the first step separation, which takes the largest burden for separation, removing out the particles larger than 100 microns.

2. The second step is the desander cones, 1 set of standard desander cone is of 10 inch diameter size, each serves around 500GPM capacity. The 3rd step of separation is the desilter cone, with standard size of 4 inch diameter size. A certain number of desander cone matches a certain number of desilter cone, like 1 desander matching 8 desilters, 2 desanders match 12 desilters, while 3 desanders match 16 desilters. Desander cones are used to choose out the particles up to 40 microns, while the desilter cones are dealing with particles of 20 microns.

3. Next step of separation is not a must in most of solids control systems, especially for the workover rigs. But in order to get cleaning drilling fluids, this equipment is more and more important because of the efficiency. It is decanter centrifuge. A middle speed decanter centrifuge can be used for barite recovery or separation of 5 to 7 micron particle sizes, while a high speed decanter centrifuge can be used for 2 to 5 microns particles.
